As promised in yesterday's post, here it comes people, are you ready, here goes:  Attention K-Mart Shoppers, (hehe, I love hearing and saying that famous callout,) there are only fifty (50) days until Christmas, if you haven't already started your shopping, please start, you'll thank me when you get yourself out there to the stores and see how much stores have raised their prices!
Christmas in the post-War United States

Just for the record, Christmas is my favourite time of the year, not only is it the season of our Saviour's birthday, but everyone, mostly everyone, is happier than they usually are, don't you think?  The peanut gallery, also known as (aka) Zac had "Bah_Humbug" to offer and "Grumble, Grumble!" you see what I have to put up with, but Zac is only joking, he loves Christmas, he just hates spending money, are they the same thing?, I think not.

I don't know if I told you this little aside already, but it is so cute, it won't hurt you to hear/read it a second time.   Recently, my nephew, Raphael, told me that for Christmas he would like a microscope as he has decided that when he grows up, Raphael is going to be a doctor, just like his Uncle Zac.

Raphael, continued to inform me that not only would Zac and he go to work together, but they would share the same office to save on expenses, hmmm. as you can tell, Zac has had a little bit of an impact on him.   But that's not the end yet people, when Raphael told me his ambition, I reminded him that his sister Sally said that she was going to be a doctor, but Sally was going to specialize and be a pediatrician.    Raphael then told me, "nah, Sally will be a weather girl."

I can't believe that sexism starts in little boys eight years of age, so I am choosing to believe that Raphael was just being cute, after all, Raphael is my nephew.   But isn't/wasn't that a cute story, gosh, its a tough crowd here today Judy I did tell all of you that Judy is here for a visit, didn't I?

Yesterday, while Zac went to the dentist, and then to visit his ninety-six year old Uncle, I did some housework.   Gosh, I really exhausted myself cleaning the house, particularly doing the vacuuming.   I hate doing housework, especially vacuuming (is vacuum spelled correctly; shoot, I used to be such a good spelling, but evidently spelling doesn't matter that much these days, but that's another story, please remind me to talk about this,) but I love the results of cleaning the house, isn't that how you feel about housework, just wondering.

Because Zac had so many cavities, and because he won't go to an American Dentist while were down south in Gainesville, Florida for two and a half months, Zac is going back to the dentist again today, and then he has another appointment next week.  I know what some of you are thinking, and you're wrong, Zac takes excellent care of his teeth, but just like I have side effects from the prednisone, Zac too has side effects from the various treatments he received to combat the three cancer's he had.   One of those side effects is that his mouth doesn't make enough saliva that's necessary for good teeth care, and this leads to more than the usual amount of cavities, so there,  do not think negatively of Zac, he is too good a person.

Just when I think that there is nothing out there that can surprise me, I read about a ten-year-old Romanian girl who gave birth. Yup, its true folks, I'm not making it up.

A 10-year-old girl from Romania has given birth in southern Spain, officials in the region have said.

The girl gave birth to a daughter last week in the city of Jerez de la Frontera, said Andalucia's social affairs minister Micaela Navarro.    Officials are deciding whether the mother and her family can keep custody, Ms Navarro said.

The father of the baby is also believed to be a minor,  no surprise there  (aged 13, )who is still in Romania, Spanish media have said.  "What we have to ensure is that both the mother, who in this case is a minor as well, and the baby are absolutely taken care of," said Ms Navarro.  "If they can be well cared for, they can stay with the family," she said.

The baby's grandmother, who is a Roma gypsy, was photographed in Spanish newspapers smiling outside the family's modest block of flats in the town of Lebrija, AFP reports.  In my day, the girl would be rushed off to relatives in another province or country, but the days of yesterday are gone forever.  The 10-year-old daughter is reported to have moved to Spain from Romania just three weeks ago.  The woman, identified only as Olimpia, was quoted as saying that the mother was "very well, like the daughter, who is very well and very pretty".  According to the Andalucia daily, Diario de Jerez, which first reported the story, the grandmother could not understand the wide level of interest in the case as "this is the age we get married in Romania".   The latest statistics show that 177 girls under the age of 15 gave birth in Spain in 2008.

Also, yesterday when I was about ready to sign off on that post, I briefly mentioned that one should start to exercise, well, today, I read the following:  Regular exercise may help fend off the common cold.   A recent study found that people who got at least 20 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise five or more days a week were sick with cold or flu symptoms for just five days of the three-month study period.

People who did little or no exercise, meanwhile, experienced these symptoms an average of nine days. Exercise is believed to temporarily boost immune system function and help the body fight infection.  How about that sports people?  Wait, I have more on the subject:  People who exercise regularly are less likely to get a cold, researchers say.   A study of 1,000 people found that staying active nearly halved the odds of catching cold viruses and, failing that, made the infection less severe.

Experts told the British Journal of Sports Medicine that this could be because exercise helps bolster the immune system to fight off bugs.  But you may not have to actually do much exercise - those who merely think they are fit enjoy the same lower risk.   Adults can expect to suffer two to five colds per year.  This latest research suggests there are lifestyle choices you can make to improve your odds of either avoiding them, or suffering too badly from them.

A British poster from World War II describing ...

For their study, US researchers asked the healthy volunteers to keep a record of any coughs and sniffles they experienced over a three-month period during the autumn and winter.  The volunteers were also asked to say how frequently in any given week they would do exercise lasting at least 20 minutes and intensive enough to break a sweat.  I hate sweat.

"Exercise makes us feel better and now here's more evidence that it is good for us”

Being older, male and married seemed to reduce the frequency of colds, as did eating plenty of fruit.   Interesting.   But the most significant factors that cut colds was how much exercise a person did and how fit they perceived themselves to be.  Feeling fit and being active cut the risk of having a cold by nearly 50%.   People who were physically active on five or more days of the week were unwell with a cold for about five days of the three-month period, compared to nine days for those who did little or no exercise.  And even when they were ill, they suffered less with their symptoms.

Speaking about colds, did you know that the common cold infections are so widespread that there can be very few humans who escape infection each year.  Adults with regular contact with children are most exposed to infection.   Cold viruses can be passed from person to person by hand contact or by touching contaminated surfaces such as door handles.   The severity of symptoms fell by 41% among those who felt the fittest and by 31% among those who were the most active

Lead researcher Dr David Nieman and his team, from Appalachian State University in North Carolina, say bouts of exercise spark a temporary rise in immune system cells circulating around the body that can attack foreign invaders.   Although these levels fall back within a few hours, each session is likely to provide an immune boost to fight off infections like the common cold.   Professor Steve Field, chairman of the Royal College of General Practitioners, said: "This is yet more evidence for doing exercise.   It reflects what we have believed for some time.   "Exercise makes us feel better and now here's more evidence that it is good for us."

Just for my blog-readers, I'm suppling you with some general facts on the common cold:   Common cold infections are so widespread that there can be very few humans who escape infection each year, I know I catch at least one cold every year and I hate the cold more than I do the flu.

At least when I get the flu, I also lose a couple of pounds.  Let's see, oh yeah, adults with regular contact with children are most exposed to infection, why are so many people mystified by this actuality, to me it is just common sense.

And who still doesn't know that cold viruses can be passed from person to person by hand contact or by touching contaminated surfaces such as door handles, this is why people there are so many marketeers out there selling you wipes, disinfectants, various brooms in all shapes and sizes, buckets, dustpans, all purpose cleaners,  powdered disinfectants, wood cleaners,  glass cleaners, spot cleaners, disinfectant cleaners, etc., I believe you get the drift of what I'm saying, and if you don't, please try the blog of my nephew Moose.

Use common sense and consistent and good hygience practices.   Wash your hands before and after going to the bathroom, I know, most of us wash their hands after we have done our business, but good hygiene ensures that you wash your hands before you pee, or poop, I know, sometimes were in a rush, but you shouldn't have waited so long!!!

And that folks seems as good as any place to stop for today, but I've got lots to say tomorrow, I always keep my promise Marta and Mable.
