Can you believe that we're already at the middle of the week, never mind that, why don't you wrap yourself up with the knowledge that Christmas Day is now just three (3) days away, and that you only have two (2), two little days left to complete your Christmas Shopping!   If you have not started your Xmas shopping yet, all I can say is good luck and DUCK!

Me, MOI!, you want to know about me.   Well, today I'm terminating my shopping after I have gone out on a shopping expedition with Dina Spring, (Biff's mother-in-law, my friend,) and my sister-in-law, Louise, I know we'll have a good time.

They tell me that the early bird catches the worm, how about, better late than never. I'm really not late, its just I was really the early bird, and it was during the month of September when I first suggested that all of you start your Christmas shopping, remember?

Today, I'm regiving that advice, and that is to aid all of the people who have started their shopping late and who now might be in somewhat of a frenzy.  Once again, in the future, get out there as early as you possibly can, and this is not a cliché when it comes to holiday shopping.  The earlier you start setting aside money, for whatever kind of shopping, establishing a budget and researching gift ideas, the more prepared you'll be to make reasonable purchases.  Make a list and check it twice.  Gather your coupons, too.  It's time to start shopping, and get out of my way, please.

It is never too early to get ideas.  The earlier you start organizing your shopping, the better decisions you'll make when you're at the stores.  You'll also beat holiday traffic.  You won't spark as much suspicion if you are asking questions well before the holidays.  You'll be empowered to make wise, thoughtful purchases, or you may shop like I do, and get things that people will definetly shake their heads to when they open it up.

Establish a budget that also leaves you with money in the bank.  Being completely honest with you, I never follow a budget, I try to and it is a good idea, I just wanted to be completely on the level with you.  You never know when you'll find the perfect gift at the last minute, and you want to allow for some impulse buys to reward yourself during the holidays.

Take a list that includes each person for whom you want to buy and a gift idea for each.  Limit one gift per person and set a dollar amount for each.  (I can't believe words that come out of my very own mouth.)   Be reasonable.  Jot down notes about each person.  Include ideas you have, stores people like and any coupons you have that can apply to a gift for each person.

Bring a snack.  Or at the very least\, bring a drink with you so that you can stay hydrated.  You'll save money if you avoid eating and drinking whilst out during your holiday shopping sprees!

Wrap gifts at home. (Unless, you are absolutely a wreck at wrapping, such as I.) You're shopping in advance so there is no need to rush the wrapping process.  Try to avoid extra spending on gift wrapping!

Time for a change of subject.  You may recall that Zac, Winter and I were scheduled to take care of Raphael and Jessie yesterday, we did, and as usual, the time flew by much too quickly.  It has been at least thirty years since I last bowled at ten-pin bowling, and I now know that ten-pin bowling is something else I can no longer do, at least, on my own, and by bowling under my own steam.

Some bowling venues have an aid that will hold your ball up for you, and if this aid is in fact available, then, I can make a feeble attempt at the bowling.  I think I actually prefer that the aid is unavailable, then,  I have a good excuse why I can't bowl, otherwise, I'm screwed and I have to give it my best shot, pun very much intended.

Since Zac had some personal errands to do, he skipped out on the bowling, which was okay as I was there to bowl with the children, but in order to even things out, later, after lunch at the Steak N Shake, I stayed home to take care of Winter, whilst Zac got to go to the show with Jessie and Raphael to see the New Narnia Movie.  You guessed it, I really wanted to see this film, and I hope I don't have to wait until its release on digital video device (dvd.)

As  many of you know, I love movies and lately I have been watching quite a few of them, especially while I'm rowing on CC.  A couple of my favourites that I've watched recently are: Love, Actually, which is always pleasant to pass a couple of hours by, A Touch of Class, and the movie really is classy, Shirley Valentine (I absolutely love this movie,) and Sister Act, which is alot of fun.
If you haven't seen any of these movies, please put them on your list to view, you'll thank me for it.

Since we are now ensconced in the season of Winter, I thought I would bring you something very timely and that relates to getting colds.  According to a recent study involving more than seven hundred (700) participants between the ages of twelve (12) and eighty (80) who were experiencing early signs of a cold, the popular herbal remedy echinacea does not speed recovery or reduce the severity of symptoms like runny nose, sore throat, and cough.  Though participants who were given echinacea for five () days reported slightly less severe symptoms, and slightly shorter colds than those who did not receive the supplement, the difference was not statistically significant, meaning it could have occurred by chance.

So, do you got the sniffles?  For most people suffering from a cold, the potential to get relief a few hours sooner probably isn't worth the trouble and cost of taking the supplement, researchers said.

With no cure for the common cold, Americans and Canadians spend billions on over-the-counter pills, drops, sprays and other concoctions to battle their runny noses, scratchy throats and nagging coughs.  Some turn to echinacea (ECK-in-AY'-shuh, as aforementioned,) a top seller marketed as a product that helps the immune system fight infections.

In the past, some studies found it did nothing to prevent or treat colds; others showed modest benefit. Research on echinacea, also known as purple coneflower, is hard to compare because there's more than one kind of plant, and different parts of it are used.

With government funding, Dr. Bruce Barrett and colleagues at the University of Wisconsin tackled the question again, using newspaper ads and posters to find volunteers with colds in the Madison, Wis., area.

The participants were randomly assigned to get echinacea tablets, a dummy pill or no treatment at all.  Those who got the herb took the equivalent of ten (10) grams of dried echinacea root the first day and five (5) grams the next four (4) days.

Twice a day, they graded their symptoms until their cold was gone.   From those scores, the researchers saw a trend toward shorter and slightly less severe colds for those taking echinacea compared to those who didn't.  However, the results did not reach statistical significance, meaning they could have occurred by chance.  There were no apparent side effects from the echinacea.

Barrett and other experts said the findings would probably be viewed as positive by echinacea supporters but as the "nail in the coffin" by critics. "It's not a compelling result in either direction," said Mark Blumenthal, executive director of the American Botanical Council, which follows research on herbal products.  He said Barrett is on the group's advisory board.

Blumenthal said the study was well designed, used a good quality product at a reasonable dosage and tested echinacea in a real-world setting, rather than giving colds to research volunteers.  The study's findings were released Monday by the Annals of Internal MedicineThe authors include the co-founder of the Australian company that provided the echinacea for the study, but he was not involved in the research.

It was funded by the National Center of Complementary and Alternative Medicine, part of the National Institutes of Health. The center, set up to test herbs and other alternative health remedies, has spent $6.8 million testing echinacea since 2002.

The center's director, Dr. Josephine Briggs, said there are no plans to support more human research on echinacea. "I think what we're seeing is pretty clear. If there's a benefit of echinacea, it's very modest, Briggs said.

So what's a cold sufferer to do? "There's nothing that's going to make it go away," said Dr. Ronald Turner, of the University of Virginia School of Medicine.   He led another government-funded study of echinacea that had negative results.

Some over-the-counter medications ease the symptoms a bit, he said. Americans and Canadians spent $5.3 billion on cold and cough remedies at major U.S. stores in the year ending Nov. 27, according to The Nielsen Co.  (Cold and cough medicines are no longer recommended for children under 4.)  And don't go running to the doctor for antibiotics, said Dr. Ann Falsey of the University of Rochester Medical Center.  Antibiotics don't work against cold viruses and can have side effects.

Rest, fluids, pain relievers and over-the-counter medications to relieve symptoms are generally recommended.

On Saturday, Kyle Cummings stood bewildered before a sea of products that filled an aisle at a drug store in New York's Pennsylvania Station.  The 21-year-old New Yorker had a sore throat and stuffy nose. "I don't know what to get," said Cummings, who blamed his cold on hunting for a second job without a winter coat.

He couldn't take anything that would make him drowsy while at work in customer service at a bank.  He settled on a Robitussin product.  Minutes later, two sniffling 16-year-old classmates, Kelly Malico and Sietske Ruijgh from New York's Long Island, stopped for cough drops.  "There's nothing you can really do," shrugged Kelly, who blamed her friend for sharing her cold.

What do the pros do?

I'm pretty old-fashioned. I put a warm sock around my throat, and I use honey and tea and lemon," said the government's Briggs.  Blumenthal of the Botanical Council takes echinacea and other herbs as well. "I hedge my bets," he said. And Wisconsin's Barrett?  "I use ginger tea. It hasn't ever been proven in anyway whatsoever. But I like it."

There you go people, I doubt I've uncovered anything new to offer you in the way of treating a cold, but I hope you at least found it interesting.

Dress appropriately whilst you're out there today, and as always, be careful and be safe in everything that you do.  And have a good day.

Try again Tuesday encore

Date:                                             Tuesday, December 21st, 2010
Days until Christmas:                    Four (4)
Word of the Day:                           ferret (FER\it); to search out, discover, or bring to light
Weight:                                          206 pounds
Goal:                                              lose 100 pounds in one year duration
Pounds to lose:                              74 pounds
Waist Size:                                    41 inches
Rowing Duration:                          one hour, fourteen (14) minutes, seven (7) seconds

I had a really good rowing session on CC this aujourdhui encore, mais I didn't do as many spurts as I would have liked to do, oh well, as Scarlett O'Hara likes to say, TOMORROW, I just simplified it a little.

Speaking of exercise, or whilst were in that vein,  this one is for all of you and I'm here to drum home the fact that you can't start making up excuses to neglect your work out when the weather starts to chill, which is what I'm willing to bet that some of you have done.

You have to keep your willpower thawed out!  If you think that the start of cold weather is the end of your exercise routine, think again.  The cold weather is no excuse to shelve your exercise goals until next season.  With a little creativity and a lot of fun, you can still keep moving during the winter.  When bikini season rolls around again, and yes, men also wear bikinis, you'll be ready to hit the beach well ahead of everybody else. I, of course, would settle for being able to wear a waist-size of "34 inches!", I know, I'm a dreamer!

Fitness programs have become an intricate aspect of life.   With every new health report, there is seemingly an influx of people joining gyms and stressing about how to fit a fitness program into busy lives.  But many people seem to choose programs that are not right for their bodies or physical conditions.  Overworking your body is not how you become fit, and it is essential to look before leaping into a program that is not tailored to you. Remember, you have to crawl before you can walk, gosh, I don't know how I was able to pull that one out, good for me, my memory can't be as bad as I thought!

Fitness programs are not limited to fancy, expensive gyms.  You can incorporate a fitness program into your lifestyle by working out in your home, walking with your kids, purchasing workout tapes or purchasing items such as Bow-Flex, which I have one, but I hate using it.  I'm probably not doing it properly.  Even simple free weights would be a good place to start, and they can be found in department stores, or you can do what I do and that is just finding objects in the house that are handy and easy to use, but best of all, don't cost anything.  If you are just beginning a fitness program, take it slowly at first.  You do not have to resemble the Incredible Hulk after your first strength training routine, and who would want to resemble Lou Ferningo anyway.  The purpose of a fitness program is to improve your health, not make you regret beginning it due to overworking yourself.

While there are many different fitness programs available, there are three main components.  The first is an aerobic routine, which I get on Cruella and CC, how do you get your cardio?  This will strengthen your heart and help you to burn calories.  It is recommended that everyone squeeze in 30 minutes a day, and this can in such activities as walking, jogging, swimming and biking.  Next is strength training, which is something I still have not began, but I am going to start soon.

People begin losing all-important muscle mass after age thirty (30,) and I am a little past thirty (30) years of age, but I don't look like I'm older, do I?  Strength training, even with free weights, three days a week will increase your lean muscle mass and help burn fat.  The last component type is stretching, which I do do, before and after my rowing session.   Stretching makes me more flexible and decrease the likelihood of back injuries, of which I certainly don't need.

The benefits of a good fitness program are plentiful.  You will burn fat and calories, strengthen your heart, increase your flexibility and endurance, and improve your sex life, whatever that is!  The last one holds more truth than people might think.  For one, once you notice a change in your physical appearance, you will begin to feel more attractive and begin expressing this physically to your partner. Secondly, it has been proven that being physically fit will cause an increased blood flow to the region of your body that controls your desire, great, what part is that?, I'm really not sure!

Before beginning any type of fitness program, talk to your doctor and get a complete physical.  You need to know what your body is capable of doing before you do it. (You wouldn't believe what my body can and can't do, hush up Lily!)  You also need to be aware of any physical limitations you might have, me, don't make me laugh!

Finally, if you are new to working out, start slowly. (When you're my age, you don't really have a choice, everything you do is on the slow speed.)  While you may want to jump in with both feet, you could soon feel discouraged if you are unable to complete the plan you have laid out for yourself. Feeling defeated will only set you back in the progress you might have made and make it hard to stay motivated, and you can stay motivated by continuing to read my blog, I know it helps me.

I'm kind of surprised that none of you seemed to notice, or just didn't bother wanting to comment, that I've managed to drop a couple more inches in my waist-line, I also may have lost weight, I really don't know because down here in Gainesville, Florida, (at this home where were renting,) there is no scale for me to weigh myself here.

Zac, Winter and I went to a couple more stores yesterday morning to get a couple of last-minute gifts for people that we don't want to feel left out; we didn't spend alot of money on these gifts as we do not want the person receiving it to feel embarrassed, as, in all likelihood, the people getting the gifts are not expecting to receive anything from us and we don't want anyone feeling bad or any situation being "too awkward."

There are now only four (4) days left until Christmas Day, that's right sports fans, there are only three (3,) that is three tiny days left to complete all of your Christmas Shopping, and if you haven't started, well, you better put a hustle on it. Good luck to you as well, you see, I do care.

Yesterday, seemed a little strange to me as I didn't talk to any of my kids, nor did I talk to my sister-in-law, Louise, there was no reason to call them, (other than the fact that I like to say hello to them and let them know that I'm thinking of them,) and I wanted to see if I could go a whole day without communicating with them, I did, but I didn't like it.

Today, Zac, Winter and I are going to be taking care of Raphael and Jessie, and we have a couple of ideas on ways to keep them amused, the kids have told us that they like to bowl, I like bowling so if I can figure out how to keep score,( and I'm really hoping that the scoring will be automatic like everything else these days,) that is what we're going to do, for at least part of the day anyway.

Well people SMILE, because the days are now getting longer and in spite of it officially becoming WINTER today, I like to focus that SPRING is now on its way; I just always feel better in the knowledge of upcoming longer days, gosh, the cottage on the lake is just around the corner, I love it there you know.

I have something to amuse you and your children now:  For the second year in a row, Americans, and I bet Canadians as well, have selected "whatever" as the most annoying word or phrase in the English language.  I know I hate hearing "whatever" frequently and I try not to use it.

Nearly thirty-nine (39) percent of those surveyed in the Marist Poll considered "whatever" most annoying in concersation, while "like" came in second, (I also understand why "like" was chosen; I bet it was close between numbers one and two,) with twenty-eight (28) percent of the vote!, (hmmm. I thought that number would have been higher/closer.)

Trailing in third place, meanwhile, was "you know what I mean," (I don't think that one is too bad,) which most annoyed ten (10) percent of those surveyed, and "actually" chosen by five (5) percent, its a good thing that they haven't read my blog, otherwise, "actually" I'm sure would have been higher in the standings.

Whatever you think about using those grating words, at the end of the day it's actually better not to say whatever, if you know what I mean. Like, I put that in for you especially Marta, as you always know what I mean, actually the rest of you will appreciate it as well, at least, I hope you do, do you miss me at work now?

Mary Azzoli or the Marist poll went on to say: "Perhaps these words are introduced through popular culture, for example movies, so they catch on" "It has a lot to do with how accepted and how popular they become in every day speech." Azzoli also said words like "whatever" can be quite dismissive depending on how they are used.  I'll say they can!!

It's the way they are delivered" and inherent in that delivery is a meaning.  The phrase "to tell you the truth" and "actually" were also unnerving to many people, including me, as aforementioned.  But for younger Americans, aged 18 to 29, "like" was the word that annoyed them most.  I know it really bugs me, mostly because that one word, "like" is frequently used as the entire sentence, and I'm supposed to understand the full extent of the message/communication, and if I don't understand the full comrehension of the sentence, it seems I wasn't listening. LIKE, WHATEVER!

We're almost finished, just an explanation of today's title post, it was with great difficulty that this post was written, there is something very wrong with this computer, technically speaking of course, I made several attempts at writing today, which should also explain why you are getting this post so late.

Well, it is time to walk the baby, this is Winter, and Winter does not like to wait when she has to go, she's just like the rest of us, bless her furry little heart.

Have a great day.

Malingering Monday

Date:                                         Monday, December 20th, 2010
Days until Christmas:               five (5)
Word of the Day:                      nth (ENTH); being the last of a series of infinetly decreasing or increasing values, amounts etc.

Weight:                                    206 pounds

Goal:                                        lose 100 pounds in one year duration
Pounds to lose:                        74 pounds
Waist Size:                              41 inches
Rowing Duration:                    one hour, nineteen (19) minutes, two (2) seconds

Good day, well I managed to do a combination of spurting and time endurance on CC this morning, so I am very pleased with how the day is starting, I hope the good things continue happening, and there is no reason why they shouldn't continue, is there?

Here we go again people, the beginning of another week, this week, however, is going to be one of your better work weeks as everyone will be (in all likelihood) in a good mood about the upcoming holiday and also the fact that a very nice long weekend is coming up.

Yup, even if you are not taking any extra time off, at the very least you are going to have next Monday and Tuesday (well, most of you anyway,) off which means at the end of this Friday, you are going to have four (4) whole days off?, how about that?, and who says you're not lucky!

There are now only five (5) days left until Christmas Day, and I am getting so excited, I will be a little sad to see it all end, but after Santa Claus gets back to the North Pole and starts plannng for next year, I'm going to focus in on the upcoming Royal Wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton, yes, that is going to be one for the history books!!!!!!!!

I would like to offer some advice regarding the receipt of presents, try to remember that whatever you receive, the gift given to you was given in the hope it would please you, so even if it is not quite what you had in mind, remember the person giving it to you only wanted to make you happy and that in itself is about the best gift that one could ever receive, the gift of happiness!

In addition, try to remember all of the gifts YOU ALREADY HAVE,  and that you probably don't think of:  the gift of sight, and hearing, the ability to walk, talk, laugh, to hold a pen in your hand, to drink water from taps out of your own home, and that you don't have to walk miles to get that water, to live in a Country wherein there is peace and not war, the gift of health care, and when you are next at the hospital and feel like complaining because things are taking awhile, try to think of all those people who would gladly change places with you just to get free health care, (yeah I know all about taxes, just once, try not to quibble so much,) and above everything else, please remember that alot of things we take for granted are GIFTS and we should once in awhile take notice of that fact.

Today, Zac, Winter and I are driving to Orlando, Florida where we will be meeting Zac's nephew, Buzz, for lunch. We have not seen Buzz, who is coming all the way from Victoria, British Columbia to attend a conference for Mechanical Engineers, since last summer when he came up to the cottage on the lake for a visit. Too bad Buzz's girlfriend, Argentina, (I love that name,) will not be with him, that would have been nice, oh well, at least we get Buzz!

Change of plans, Zac just checked out the name of the place wherein we're supposed to meet Buzz and he discovered that he got the dates of Buzz's visit mixed up, Buzz is not coming to Florida until after the New Year.   Consequently/obviously we will not be going to Orlando, Florida today, oh well, I have lots of shopping that still need my attention, there is always something to do, don't you fin

I forgot to mention to you yesterday how very much I enjoy going to worship down here, the minister, at least that's what I think he is called, does not deliver the message of God in an angry tone, and this pleases me. I hate it when the person delivering God's message does it with such wrath, I think I know why they do this, (fear of the Lord and all that sort of good stuff,) I just happen to think and believe in the old adage that you can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar, because, for me, the vinegar really does turn me off of going to Church, as always, I prefer honey.

I just love finding material that seems so obvious to me and to other people that it makes you shake your head to find out that they needed a study to find out. The study I'm referring to of today is one that is indicative that new research supports the idea that once peole marry and are off the dating scene, they tend to let themselves go.  What a compete and utter surprise, I had no idea?  Isn't that a shock to your person?

A study of nearly 8,900 adults found that men and women who got married during the course of the study generally expereinced a decline in cardiovascular fitness, as measured by a treadmill test. Women who remained single, meanwhile, showed a small increase in their fitness level over time, as did men who got divorced during the study.  I love how they indicate men and women, it's single women, of course, and then, naturally, its divorced men, hehe, funny how they word those two things.   The findings highlight the influence of social factors on people's fitness levels, I really love and appreciate the thought they leave us with,  and that is that people who stay single, or become single again by divorce, may be somewhat more physically fit than those in wedded bliss! Isn't that quite a recommendation for marriage, indeed!!!!!

Still, researchers say the results support the notion that once people are married and, presumably, off the dating market, they tend to let themselves go a bit.   (For me, I only let myself go one hundred and fifty pounds, that might be a bit more, don't you think?)  But if they remain single or get divorced, they have more incentive to get in shape.  (For these facts, we need a study, okay.) That's not to say that there's a huge fitness chasm between singles and married couples.  No, lets not say that.

In this study, changes in marital status were related to only small changes in fitness, lead researcher Dr. Francisco B. Ortega, of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, told Reuters Health in an e-mail.   Dr. Ortega stressed that any one person's fitness levels depend on a complex mix of factors, including genetics, exercise habits, body composition and overall health.   But if the newly wedded are aware that their physical fitness could wane, they might pay more attention to keeping up an exercise routine, according to Dr. Ortega and his colleagues.  I, also happen to agree with these findings.

The findings are based on 6,900 men and 1,971 women who were followed for just over three years at the Cooper Clinic in Dallas, Texas.   They had physical exams, reported on their lifestyle habits and underwent treadmill tests to gauge their physical fitness.  When it came to marital status, the researchers found, women who remained single during the study period showed a small increase in their fitness levels over time.  That gain was not seen among women who got married,  I'm sure, however, that women can tell you of other benefits, you're welcome Lily!, (you'll figure it out!)

For their part, (oh good, men have a part, hehe) men who married showed a decline in fitness, but so did those who stayed single, though theirs was a smaller loss.   For men, the differences were more apparent when the researchers looked at divorce and re-marriage.  Men who got divorced during the study showed a gain in fitness levels, while those who remained married saw no change.  Meanwhile, men who were divorced at the outset showed a general decline in fitness over time, but the drop was steepest among those who got re-married, YIKES encore for the institution of marriage!

There was no evidence of any divorce "benefit" among women.   (For me, this lends itself to alot of prejudice and generalizations.)   However, the researchers say one reason could be that there were far fewer women in the study than men, (ah, there we go, duh, why didn't they say that upfront,) and only a small number of women changed their marital status during the follow-up period.

The researchers say the findings highlight the role of social factors in people's fitness levels. "This study provides for the first time evidence that marital transitions are (an) important social stimulus that can influence fitness, and that fits in with the general idea that major life transitions affect people's health habits!" I thought so, well I did!!!!!

Well, I guess that is it for me today, have a good one, stay happy people, it is the season of our Saviour's birth and there should only be smiles.

Salads on Sunday; not for me!

Date:                                         Sunday, December 19th, 2010
Word of the Day:                       replevy (ri\PLEV\ee); to recover goods or chattels wrongfully taken or detained

Weight:                                     206 pounds
Goal:                                         lose 100 pounds in one year duration
Pounds to lose:                         74 pounds
Waist Size:                                41 inches
Rowing Duration:                     97 minutes, nineteen (19) seconds

Good day, as you will note by my rowing indicator, I did alot better today, and the reason is that I cut down in the spurts, I still did spurting, I just reduced them a little to save on my strength. so that I could row longer.

Well, I've had two very busy days in a row, and I absolutely love it, perhaps this means I'm getting more of my strength back and I'm on a better road to recovery, we'll all see, won't we?

I got my hair cut yesterday morning at a store called"Trim Cuts" which is about one mile away from where we live, the young lady who cut my hair, named Tiffany gave me a really nice trim, which is just what I wanted, so now on Christmas Day, I won't resemble that of a sheepdog, I'm so pleased!

I went to my nephew's basketball game as well yesterday, I felt Raphael's team played alot better than they did the previous week, they still lost, but they played much better.  And they all seemed to be having fun which is the most important fact of Raphael playing on this team, that and learnng to work and count on someone other than yourself.  Oh, how true.

I was never very good at team sports and no matter how hard I tried, it was better for me to concentrate on activities wherein I did not need the assistance of others, such as swimming, which is something I was quite good at doing.

I learned how to swim because at a very young age, I got to go to summer camp and, well, lets face it, when you go to summer camp,  one of the main activities that campers get to do is that of swimming.  Lucky for me, the camp taught the Royal Life Swimming program and I was able to acquire Red Cross badges and medals for different phases of the swimming program.

I went up the swimming ladder quickly and when I turned eighteen years of age, I was qualified to teach swimming as I had earned the highest achievement that one can get in swimming and that is known as "The Lifeguard."  Let me explain one thing about "The Lifeguard," I am not talking about being qualified to be a lifeguard, this was achieved when I was sixteen years old and got my bronze medallion, when you get your bronze, you can be a lifeguard.  No, "The Lifeguard" is a certificate program, it is much like getting a doctrate in swimming,  you have to complete many, many hours of swimming, rescuing, and even boating!  And for the record, I had received my instructor's certificate the year prior to getting "The Lifeguard." But, I had to lie about my age to get that one!

Yesterday afternoon Zac and I took all three children to see a movie, the two girls went with Zac to see the movie "Yogi Bear," and I took Raphael to another cinema to see the movie "The Tron Legacy," a film that I originally did not want to see, but I enjoyed it immensely thanks to Raphael's insistence that we go and see it, gosh Jeff Bridges is an excellent actor, I can't wait to see him in the remake of the movie "True Grit."

You probably already know this little fact, but this is something I am just beginning to learn, when you have children, you never really have definite plans, you need to stay flexible because children's wants change rather quickly and frequently.

As you may recall, the plan yesterday was for us to go and see either of the films, "MegaMind" or the new "Narnia" film.  As you now know, we saw neither, and that is because we told the kids we would go to any movie they wanted, give kids carte blanche and they will take it to the fullest, but you know what?, I love learning new things about the children, I'm getting wiser, at least I think I'm getting wiser.

The Yogi Bear Show
After the movie, everyone except Biff and Winter went to the Sonny's restaurant, where we all dined on different things, and by the time we finished eating, went back to Biff's house to pick up Winter, everyone seemed to be ready to go home and get ready for bed, which is what we did.  I was so tired that when I got  home I immediately got into my pajamas for bed, you thought I slept nude, didn't you?

There are now only six (6) days left until Christmas Day, yup, at this time next week, Santa Claus will be resting after a long night's work, (he'll probably sleep for at least a month,) Christmas will all be over with for another year, and my fellow Canadians will be out shopping for all of the good deals that will be available on Boxing Day, they don't have Boxing Day down here, but then again, we don't have Black Friday, so I guess between the two (2) countries, it all works out to the same thing.

Did you hear that they may have found bone fragments that were that of Amelia Earhart's, yes indeed, three small bones found on a deserted South Pacific island, 1,800 miles south of Hawaii may be the remains of missing pilot, Amelia Earhart, who disappeared in 1937 during an attempt to circumnavigate the globe.

There is some evidence that Amelia Earhart and her copilot, Fred Noonan, made it safely to Nikumaroro Island in Kiribata and lived as castaways, but there is currently no definitive proof that this was the case.  It is hoped that DNA analysis of the bone fragments will shed some light on the mystery of what happened to Earhart and Noonan, but I would prefer it remain a secret as to what happened to them, I love a good mystery and would rather hold on to the various and plentiful  "what ifs" scenarios, bu that's me.

Well people, I need to now end this post as I am going to church early this morning, I am not only going to worship, but my youngest niece down here, Jessie, is singing in the church choir today and I would love to hear her sing, in addition, Jessie's Grandparents, will also be doing some kind of performance there, so that is an extra bonus that Zac and I will get to see and hear this morning.

Sorry, I just got back from Church and I realize I didn't publish today's post, I'm so silly, I rushed beforehand to get the post done and then to get it to you, and what do I do?, I leave, go to a special Church Contatta, have breakfast at the Church-hall afterwards, go to WalMart to buy Tootsie Roll lollypops, which are one of my favourite candies, and then, finally, come back home were I realize that I  completely forget about you, je big regret, encore regret.

I hope all of you have a good day and that you take care.

Saturday: The TO DO DAY

Date:                                       Saturday, December 18th, 2010
Logo for The Home Depot. Category:Brands of th...Word of the Day:                   stentorian(sten\TOR\ee\uhn); extremely loud
Weight:                                   206 pounds
Goal:                                       lose 100 pounds in one year duration
Pounds to lose:                       74 pounds
Waist Size:                              43 inches
Rowing Duration:                  69 minutes, eighteen (18) seconds

It's that busy, busy day again, the day when you try to get all of your chores done so that you can have some kind of peace tomorrow, but today you want to clean your house, get that item from the Home Depot Store, take your little one to Chrissy's birthday party, send Serena to that sleepover at Tammy Faye's house and try to keep your brother-in-law happy by lending him your children for a couple of hours, am I being too subtle here?

Well, I knew it was bound to happen, yet again, this is the second version of my post, my computer was misbehaving and I lost my earlier version, I hope I can remember what I wrote down earlier, I doubt it but I'll certainly try.

Once again you will note that the rowing duration indicator isn't very long, and besides the spurt factor, another possible reason for the decline is that Zac has had to give me quite a few shots (injections) of depomedrol for my asthma, I've had at least five (5) injections.  The liquid prednisone clears up my asthma nicely but I do suffer from quite a few side effects, such as my legs get quite weak and it is difficult for me to walk.  Oh well, it could be worse.

Yesterday was a busy day for Zac and I, or should I just say busier day?  We started the day by going to breakfast at the 43rd Street Diner, we go there alot for breakfast.  At the diner we always have the same server, her name is Jackie and Jackie would like us to buy the house that is next to hers, Jackie thinks we would make good neighbours, little does she know, hehe.

The lady that owns the house that Zac and I are renting, her name is Lee came by yesterday afternoon to pick up her mail.  We like Lee alot,  but she is worried that the house we are renting has not sold yet.  The house has been on the market for a long time now and is a bargain, it is a short sale and I'm sure if somebody put in an offer of one hundred and ninety-thousand dollars, they would get the house.

One of the features of the house that I really like is the size of all four (4) of the bedrooms, they are quite large, and builders today just don't build bedrooms this large.  And three (3) of those bedrooms have full bathrooms, that too isn't shabby.  Naturally, the house has a swimming pool, large kitchen, dining, laundry and living rooms.  The house would be perfect for Zac and I if it were a brighter house, this house is too dark for us as I like the house bright and sunny, like me.  Good luck Lee.

Yesterday afternoon Zac and I paid a visit to the CVS Drug Store and I managed to get alot of my stocking stuffers, it cost me just under two (2) hundred dollars and that was on purchases that I consider "little things." and I'm not yet finished with those "little things," yikes, will it ever end?

It finally happened folks, last night Winter went to my brother Biff's house for a sleepover.  The youngest one there, Jessie, has wanted Winter as a houseguest for some time now so I'm glad that the opportunity finally presented itself, although I had no idea how much I would worry and miss WinterThis is the first time that Zac and I have ever been separated from Winter and it was rough!!!!!

Winter is going to be at Biff's house a little longer today as Zac and I have plans to take the children, Sally, Jessie and Raphael to see a movie, it will either be "MegaMind" or the new "Narnia" movie.  In either case, Biff will probably end up watching Winter, and this is okay, Biff loves Winter alot more than he pretends to, we all know this, and we actually believe that Winter has a little love thing going on for Biff, how about that Louise, you got competition!

Since we did not have Winter with us, Zac and I went to the show last night to see Cher's comeback movie "Burlesque" which I'm telling you not to go and see, there were some cute bits but certainly not worth the cost of admission and certainly not worth the cost of those refreshments, gosh candy and popcorn costs alot at the show, too much!  The one thing that was kind of a plus is that Zac and I did not have to pay the admission fee because I had a couple of passes that were given to me.  Thank goodness for that.

There is now just one (1) week left until Christmas Day, that's seven (7) days people and if you have not started your Christmas Shopping yet, let me say this to you, you're in do do, really, because today is known as Super-Saturday and is one of the busiest shopping days ever.   It's not going to be fun with all those last-minute crowds that are surely going to be out there, well, you can't say you were not warned!

I am now ending today's post because you and I both want to get on with our day and to be honest, I need to check up on my child, I can't believe how much I miss Winter, am I being silly?

Have a good one.

Favourite Friday again, my fantastic, favourite day of the week

Date:                                        Friday, December 17th, 2010
Word of the Day:                      liminal(LIM\uh\nl); relating to a point beyond which a situation becomes too faint to be experienced

Weight:                                    206 pounds
DRESDEN, GERMANY - NOVEMBER 26: A giant Chris...Goal:                                       lose 100 pounds in one year duration
Pounds to lose:                        74 pounds
Waist Size:                              43 inches
Rowing Duration:                    68 minutes, four (4) seconds

Well, we all made it to Friday again, give yourselves a pat on the back and smile, there is no reason not to smile, it increases your value to people, smile, and you'll probably get a smile back to you, just think about that, why don't you?

As you will note from my rowing duration indicator, once again I did not do the endurance level that I once could do, I'm exerting so much energy and strength during the spurts that I have very litttle reserve after I have been doing it for an hour.  In addition, my right side of the back, I guess it's in the kidney region gets very painful,  and I have to stop to alleviate some of the pressure, but I know I had a good workout and that is the important thing.

Last night, Zac, Winter and I watched the final show of "Larry King Live" we will all miss watching Mr. Larry King, I know I've certainly enjoyed all of the interviews he's done with celebrities, news-makers and sports heroes, and on a personal note, I want you to know that like Larry King, I, too, wear suspenders every day, mine just are not as colourful as Mr. King's suspenders, not yet!

There are now only eight (8) days left until Christmas Day, which means you only have one full week to complete all of your Christmas Shopping, do you hear me people? One final week to complete your Christmas Shopping and then BAM, you are going to be confronted with the looks on your children's faces, will they be happy ones?, or will they be melancholy?, it's up to you, and of course, Santa Claus!

Not to gripe, too much anyway, I was a little disappointed that you never chose to provide me with any feedback on how to fight with your partner when there are children around?  I really want some outside thoughts on this subject, so please give it some more thought and send your input on to me, I really appreciate it.

Did you know that in 1996, World Chess Champiion Garry Kasparov went head-to-head with IBM's supercomputer Deep Blue for the first time, winning the match.  (I can honestly say that I never thought that I would see the day when man would be playing Chess with a machine.)  However, in a rematch the next year, Kasparov was defeated.  Now, man will once again be pitted against machine, this time for the game show "Jeopardy," which as an aside, is one of my very favourite shows, and Zac's of course (I wish Zac would be a contestant on "Jeopardy" he is so smart, I know he could win!,)

A computer program named "Watson" developed by IBM's artificial intelligence team, will compete against the show's most successful past champions, Ken Jennings, (I remember Old Blondie, do you?) and Brad Rutter, (I remember him beating Ken Jennings as well,) for a $1 (one) million prize.  The matches will air this Februay 2011.

IBM's supercomputer Watson will compete in an edition of the popular Unitd States (US) quiz show "Jeopardy" on 14 February for a prize of $1m (£634,000).  It is reminiscent of a 1997 contest between an IBM computer and chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov.  The TV show is an important test for Big Blue's work in the field of artificial intelligence.   "The big challenge we see here is helping people really appreciate the power and limits of the technology we are developing with Watson," Dr David Ferrucci, IBM's chief scientist of Watson computing told BBC News.

The aim is to have Watson, which was named after IBM's founder Thomas J Watson, to mimic human intelligence by deciphering and answering questions without being connected to the internet.  Watson is a new question-answering system based on natural language.  "What I see is the potential for computers to help us with our tremendous frustration in dealing with the huge glut of information that is doubling every year," said Dr Ferrucci.

"Just imagine being able to converse with a computer in an intelligent dialogue to help you understand and leverage all that information out there, so that people can focus on solving their problem and not get overwhelmed by information. That is what Watson is about."

IBM said that the technology could be applied in a number of areas such as health care for accurately diagnosing patients, parsing legal documents, or to solve customer problems at technical support centres. "Jeopardy" is seen as the ultimate challenge in the artificial intelligence world because the game's clues involve analysing subtle meanings, irony, riddles and other complexities where humans excel and machines do not.

Dr Ferrucci said the tough part for Watson is that it has to "know what it knows with utmost confidence".  Mr Jennings and Mr Rutter are battle hardened contestants. "Otherwise if it buzzes in and gets the answer wrong that is bad on Jeopardy because you lose money and lose the game."

Watson has been preparing for its big moment in the spotlight by playing against previous Jeopardy winners. To date it has played 55 games but IBM is keeping mum about how well Watson performed.

The contestants willing to pit their wits against Watson are Ken Jennings who won 74 games in a row, the most consecutive victories ever, and Brad Rutter, who scored the most money with winnings of more than $3 million.

IBM said it would donate its winnings to charity while Mr Jennings and Mr Rutter said they would give half of their prize money away. "Whether we win or lose we are reasonably confident going forward in the competition and I think it is important to play competitively," said Dr Ferrucci.

The showdown will be spread over three days that will air on TV from 14-16 February.  I, for one, Zac, for two, will watch these matches, I bet they're going to be a hoot and a half to watch, look out for these matches yourself, you might enjoy them.

Thursday's are close, but they don't get the big prize

Date:                                          Thursday, December 16th, 2010
Word of the Day:                       boondocks(BOON\doks); a remote rural area
Weight:                                      206 pounds
Goal:                                           lose 100 pounds in one year duration
Pounds to lose:                          74 pounds
Waist Size:                                 43 inches
Rowing Duration:                      71 minutes, fourteen (14) seconds

Well, I had some bad luck with producing today's post, I had just about completed my post when my computer went down for no reason and I lost all my work, consequently, I am a little defeated in the fact that I don't really much feel like writing everything all over again and I'll probably forget something, oh well, that's what happens from time to time when you live in this technological age.

I did have a good workout session on CC this morning, I managed to complete alot of spurts during the workout, it's true, that when I do these spurts, they take so much out of me that I don't have the same endurance strength that I used to, but I believe my body is getting a better workout so I'm going to continue doing the spurts, we'll see in time if I'm doing the right thing, I'm pretty sure I am.

Yesterday, Zac and I met our sister-in-law, Louise, and her mother, Dina Spring, for lunch.  We met at Louise's workplace, and from there we drove to a quaint little restaurant that was inside a store (I forget the name,) and served special cheeses, soups, teas and sandwiches, we all had a nice time indulging in eating good food and having intelligent conversation, although the time flew by much too quickly, doesn't it always?

After lunch, Zac and I had to fly to "The Talbot Public School" as we were designated to pick up Raphael and Jessie and watch them for two hours.  Naturally, I took the kids to the "Toys R Us" store so that I could finish my major Christmas shopping, there was still a gift that I needed to buy for Raphael.

I had Raphael show me all of the toys he hoped he would get for Christmas, and I also had Jessie show me gifts she wanted, but I don't think I fooled either of the children, they're both rather very smart and are not easily fooled, especially by me.
Christmas in the post-War United States

Christmas Day is December 25th, Christmas Day is fast approaching yet I can't get anything up on Zemanta about Christmas, why isn't Zemanta giving me pictures of Christmas, of snow, of Santa Claus, of Santa's reindeer, of Rudolph the red-nose reindeer,

Okay, this news is a little different but it has so much hope involved that I wanted to share it with you.  It seems that immature sperm cells called spermatogonial stem cells have been transformed by researchers into insulin-producing pancreatic cells that could potentially be used to treat patients with Type One (1) Diabetes, isn't that something?

When transplanted into mice, these lab-created cells acted like pancreatic beta cells and began producing insulin (from all places, imagine that?) in type one (1) diabetes, the immune system mistakenly destroys the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas, meaning that patients must receive injections of insulin for the remainder of their lives.  But if researchers can develop effective replacement cells, such injections could become a thing of the past.  I think this is the most interesting discovery and I'm hoping that for all Type-One diabetes people this research pans out!

A team at Georgetown University in Washington worked with spermatogonial stem cells, master cells that give rise to sperm in men.  Ian Gallicano and colleagues used germ-derived pluripotent stem cells, which are made from the spermatogonial stem cells.  They nurtured these cells in the lab with compounds designed to make these cells start acting like pancreatic beta cells, which produce insulin.

When transplanted into diabetic mice, these cells produced insulin, acting like the pancreatic beta cells that the body mistakenly destroys in type-1 diabetes, Gallicano's team told a meeting of the American Society for Cell Biology in Philadelphia.

Currently, children and young adults diagnosed with type-1 diabetes must take insulin for life, as mentioned earlier.  A few may be treated with the so-called Edmonton Protocol, in which the missing pancreatic cells are transplanted from cadavers.  But there is a shortage of these cells and the patients may suffer from graft-versus-host disease if the cells are not a good match.

Gallicano said men's own cells could be used as a source of their transplants, and he said perhaps the approach may work in women too. "While these cells come from the human testis, the work here is not necessarily male-centric," they wrote. "These fundamental aspects could easily be applied to the female counterpart, oocytes."

Separately, James Wells and colleagues at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center in Ohio turned two different kinds of stem cell into complex layers of intestinal tissue.  They used both human embryonic stem cells, taken from days-old embryos, and induced pluripotent stem cells,  made from ordinary cells transformed by introducing certain genes.   Both types have the power to give rise to all the cell types in the body when cultured in the lab like the Georgetown team did.

Writing in the journal Nature, Wells's team showed they could transform these cells into what they called organoids,  batches of intestinal tissue made out of the layers of the various cells that make up intestine, including muscle cells and the cells that line the inside of the gut and that produce several vital compounds.  These organoids can be used to study intestinal diseases such as necrotizing enterocolitis, inflammatory bowel diseases and short-gut syndromes and perhaps could be used to treat them someday, Wells's team said.

Like I said, I hope that research pays off, we all will benefit.

There are now only nine (9) days left until Christmas Day, it's getting here fast, isn't it?  Quick arithmetic will indicate to you that there are now only eight (8), just eight days left for you to complete your Christmas shopping and I only have stocking-stuffers to get, which is more than enough worry for me!

I hope you all have a great day, the weekend is almost here, you can do it!
